Why You Need to Consider Mobile Learning Now

M-Learning, also known as mobile learning, is reshaping the way we create and distribute learning materials. With the goal of making content that works on multiple platforms and mobile devices, M-learning is quickly gaining in popularity.

When most people hear the phrase “mobile learning” they assume it means adjusting existing eLearning content to work on mobile devices, but mobile learning goes much further than that. M-learning is focused on finding new ways to deliver learning to mobile users. With the goal of delivering content that is impactful, engaging and brief mobile learning is a change maker that can improve your current training program. Here are a few of the ways mobile learning is changing the game:

  • Creating less formal content: Training curriculum is known for being rigid. Even as we have an increased awareness about how people learn, the traditional training model has remained pretty much the same. M-learning relies on shorter informal training that is designed to create a more natural learning experience. With modules between 2-3 minutes that integrate video and images that are built to be remembered it is based on the average attention span by pushing small burst of learning that can be absorbed quickly.
  • You get just what you need: A lot of traditional training is about backstory, things that are nice to know, but not always necessary for the task or project you need to complete. M-learning doesn’t care about those things; it wants to give you what you need to know when you need to know it. Using the idea of JIT (just in time learning) the goal is that you know what you need to know to do what you need to do. And nothing more.
  • It knows you cannot pay attention: M-learning understands that you have a lot going on. So it lets you access the training on your time, and it keeps the information short and sweet. Its reliance on the visual can be a struggle for those learners who lean toward a more auditory or verbal style. So while it can provide the information needed, it isn’t a perfect solution.

M-learning has one main advantage over traditional or eLearning, it already knows that people have short attention spans. And while it is a good solution for pushing what you need to know when you need to know it, it is not a replacement for traditional training and eLearning. It is however a good partner as it can be used to reinforce topics learned a classroom or online learning environment.

If you are unsure how to add a mobile learning to your existing training program here are a few ways you can get started.

  • Start with a strategy: Having a clear focus can help you create content that drives your intended message.
  • Keep it short: Fifteen minutes should be the max for mobile training modules. But given that the average attention span is 2-3 minutes aiming closer five or less will have a larger impact on your audience.
  • Mix up the media: Integrate graphics, videos and audio into your mobile training with a purpose. When you are dealing with short modules you want to make sure that everything is designed to yield your desired result.

Mobile learning is a great way to increase engagement and keep your employees up to date and on point. So if it isn’t a part of your current training, maybe now is the time to take your program to the next level.
